After overhearing a preschool teacher that I worked with recommend the Letter Factory DVD to a parent, I figured it had to be good. After my first son, Brett, was born I started feeling all this pressure for him to constantly be educated in everything he did or saw. When his second birthday was approaching, I remembered The Letter Factory and figured I would give it a shot and buy it for him not expecting him to get much out of it since he was still pretty young. I was wrong. It was the best $10 I have ever spent.
Leap Frog's Letter Factory DVD is an incredible educational tool for parents to use to help their children between the ages of 2 and 5 learn each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Kids are also taught the phonetic pronunciation of each letter. Children are educated and engaged for an entire 35 minutes (long enough for you to take a shower, cook dinner, or just enjoy the peace and quiet in another room).
The DVD centers on Tad who visits the letter factory with his family. He visits each of the letters of the alphabet in their own classrooms where they are learning their own sounds. Tad pants with the H's in a hot room, karate kicks with the K's, and pops popcorn with the P's. What really makes this DVD so effective is that it combines the visuals of the actual letters with their phonetic sounds to make a catchy (and actually not annoying) little tune:
"The B says buh, the B says buh,
Every letter makes a sound, the B says buh."
After about 4 weeks of watching this video, I was absolutely blown away by the effectiveness of it. I could not believe how quickly Brett was identifying different letters and the sounds after only a short time. He was pointing out and naming different letters that were in his surrounding environment (building signs, grocery stores, and books).
So many of my friends and family were amazed with how he knew all of the letters and sounds. They were actually giving me kudos and all I did was pop in the DVD and park his butt on the couch for 35 minutes. I had to come clean and give Leap Frog all the credit for his success.
If I had to give this product a "con" it would be because of the fact that it requires children to be sitting in front of the television for more than a half hour. If you absolutely do not want your child watching TV, then this is not the product for you. Personally, I think it is worth it since children are really learning something and enjoying themselves in a relatively short amount of time.
Recognizing their letters and sounds gives children a great foundation for learning how to read. You can purchase the wonderful Letter Factory DVD at Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Amazon.

This sounds like a great use of technology. Even for parents who do not want to sit their child in front of the TV for any length of time, the results of your son speak for themselves. I will definetly be recommending this to my aunt (her son is just starting to learn letters). Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information on Leap Frog I will use it. I have a 19 month old grandson and I think this will be a big hit with not only him, but his parents too. I'll follow you since you seem to be a good source of information for young children.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have a three year old brother who loves technology, so i think this would be a great thing for him to have! I appreciated all the information you provided, and that you told me where I could get it! I may have to invest in the DVD for him!
ReplyDeleteI've always been a little skeptical when it comes to technological learning tools for children so I was excited to read your post and learn about your experience with this DVD! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteAs an elementary education major, I am always interested in reading about learning tools for children. Therefore, I really enjoyed reading this post. This is a great review of the product; I appreciate that you address the results that you have noticed in your son's ability to recognize and pronounce the letters and sounds. I agree with you-- these 35 minutes in front of the TV seem completely worth it since the child is truly learning.
ReplyDeleteP.S.- I love the header that you designed. It is adorable!
This is such a cute blog! you really did a wonderful job with it. I plan to refer to your blog whenever I need to by my pregnant friends baby shower gifts. Great job :)
ReplyDeleteAs a preschool teacher myself, I found myself humming along with the Letter Factory song- the children in my classroom really love it! I have found that it works really well for preschool-aged children, and gives them a fun way to learn their letters.
ReplyDeletelove the layout, you did a fantastic job designing the blog. Since we were not in the same group and I am not aware what the intent is, I am curious as to what future blogs will entail. I guess I could always go read your reading 10 post :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your blog!!
What a great idea for a blog! I'm not sure how frequently I'll revisit because I'm not planning on having kids for a loooong time. Baby shower gift ideas for friends though, this will definitely be a go too.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not have kids of my own, my nephews are 2 and 5. I am always trying to think of educational gifts, so this post was helpful. In fact, it's my nephew's birthday this week! I might just have to invest in your idea... Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI really love the layout of this blog and it has such a creative name. Not only are the features nice, but the blog itself is great. My friend's son is 2 and she's due to have another boy in August. I'm definitely going to recommend this product to her. So glad you shared!
ReplyDeleteI dig the design. It reflects the nature of your blog and posts that I've read so far. It's good to see a design concept that so closely reflects the content of the blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute blog! The design, colors and the name are just perfect. I'm going to check out that DVD because I have a little niece that I think it would be great for. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteI really like your Blog title and the pictures at the top; very fun and catchy! I also like your part in the blog when you describe "the bee says buh". I was saying out loud while I was reading it. LOL! I'm glad that you verified how effective it was for your son and that you didn't leave out the downside to DVD learning. I appreciate the honesty. Good job.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love your blog design and the header. The pictures are unique and rather vintage. I like the review of the DVD and the fact that you give the good/bad as well as suggestions as to where someone can find it. Good luck with your blog - its very unique!
ReplyDeleteI like the way you have every thing set up a lot! It looks like the work of a professional. Also, the content is very strong and kept me interested even though I don't have any children or anything. Great job!
ReplyDeleteEven though I don't have children yet, I've definitely learned some things and will remember them when that time comes. Great first post!
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not have a child of my own, I think that your blog seems super parent friendly. It's also relatable and I don't feel like I'm reading an ad for a product. I also think the layout of your blog is very welcoming and easy to navigate.
ReplyDeleteI love the design of your blog, especially the tabs at the top. Although I'm not a parent myself, I am a fan of kid-friendly recipes as I nanny part-time. Can't wait to see what recipes and other knowledge you have to share.
ReplyDeleteI'm far, far away from having children, but can definitely see the value in your blogs. Having worked as a nanny in the past, this information could definitely be helpful to those of us non-parents. Your header is super cute and ties in perfectly with your blog theme.
